THE MAKING OF MENTAL MAPS
problem statement
Mental Map [n] – An individual’s visualization of an area based on their known sense of direction and scale.
All maps are of the mind; visual constructions for depicting and understanding place. Their topic, projection, orientation, scale, and mode of representation are dependent solely upon their creator.
For this assignment the students created a series of mental maps of their ‘hometown’ – or a city of which you are intimately familiar. With freedom of content, the students were allowed to focus on neighborhoods, economic districts, transportation modes, points of civic interest, restaurant locations, or any other topic (that can be spatially-defined).
